In Memory

Raymond Scheffler, Jr.

Raymond Scheffler, Jr.

Raymond Robert SCHEFFLER June 7, 1945 ~ March 28, 2010

Ray "Skip" Scheffler Jr. was the first proud son born to Raymond and Dorothy Scheffler in Brooklyn New York shortly following World War II, where his father had served in the Pacific. As a Navy brat, his childhood life was influenced by moving to Jacksonville FL, Charleston SC, Norfolk VA, Camden NJ, and San Diego CA. From the time of birth, Ray loved to talk. Meeting people and making friends in new schools came naturally to him where others would have struggled. When his father retired and moved to Seattle in 1962, Ray attended Edmonds High School and continued on to Everett Community College, both of which expanded his list of friends. He, like many others, heard the call to serve his country during the Vietnam War, joined the Navy, and served aboard the USS Canberra. Following the war, Ray returned to college and graduated from the University of Washington. He married the love of his life Dianne, and relocated to Alaska during the pipeline boom as a stockbroker. He gained his MBA from the University of Alaska and continued his employment working in various banking and financial institutions. The highlight of his life was being blessed with his daughter April, and she was his constant companion and best friend. Unfortunately, Ray and Dianne separated and he returned to the Seattle area where his father and mother were living in Monroe. With his parents living into their 90s before passing, it would have appeared a long and happy future would be ahead for him. Ray was adventuresome, fearless, outgoing, and flamboyant. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, electronics, scuba diving, and showing off his culinary skills. Uncharacteristic of many his age, he loved the latest and greatest of computers, game boxes, and every conceivable toy. All the while he maintained his strong faith in God which he attributed to gaining during Vietnam. Tragically he was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2008 and spent his remaining time continuing his employment as a medical records processor at IOD Incorporated and enjoyed as much as life could offer to him. His employer continued to support Ray during his battle, and he continuously voiced his appreciation and gratitude for this and the attention of his coworkers. He had never lost his love for Dianne, put his past in the rearview mirror, and looked ahead to the potential for them to remarry. Although losing his battle with cancer, his special smile, pragmatic analytical comments, humor, and conviction were alive and well in his last days; smiling and blessing the Lord for the life he had been given. Ray is survived by his daughter April Scheffler, ex-wife Dianne Alger, brother Conrad Scheffler and sister-in-law Gail Scheffler. As well as cousins Linda and Barbara Colson (South Carolina), Uncle John, and Aunt Clara Scheffler (Iowa).

April Scheffler (Garner)

Hi everyone -

I'm not sure how many of you my dad knew/were his friends/maybe you knew him and he didnt know you,  i'm thankful to have found this site so I could update people properly, even if at the time of this posting it's 12 years late. I'm sorry for that.  Thank you to my dads friend, and my friend as well, Mark Patterson, for  updating me on this site after I found it. I'm glad there is a place like this.

There is a memorial page that has pictures of him throughout his life that we were able to do through the funeral home, if you'd like to check it out. The links for flower sending and such are no longer accurate, but at least to see pictures smiley

Ray was my friend and I miss him to this day. I went searching the net for my "long lost" friend several years ago and found that Ray had passed away 7 years earlier. I felt blown away..........7 years ago??? I can't explain how I felt, but for me it was "yesterday"! I was lucky that I found and contacted his daughter April, who let me tell you folks.....is ONE very fine and wonderful young woman!....Period! I know that Ray, looking down from heaven is rightfully proud of her too. May you rest in peace, my friend.

Thank you for the note, April.

My memory of Ray goes way back, but what I remember most was his biting but good-hearted sense of humor, keeping things in proper perspective, and whenever I spoke with Ray, I would expect not only informative conversation but also some level of subtle entertainment. In fact, thinking about it, I laugh as I type this. He had that knack. Ray was sharp. And always dressed well. I’m not too surprised that he developed a renaissance breadth of talents, and am happy he became a man of faith. Ray always had it covered. RIP.

Chuck
