Longtime Portland, OR resident and independent grocer, Peter J. O'Neal, 65, died November 3, 2010, at his home in Vancouver, WA with his family by his side. Peter was passionate about his chain of supermarkets and took delight in working with his store teams to give outstanding service to their customers and to be trusted partners with the communities they served. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, Peter loved fishing since boyhood and took pleasure in fishing the Oregon rivers and coast, as well as his annual fishing trips to Alaska. Mr. O'Neal was a trusted and inspiring leader. He served on the Board of Directors of United Grocers from 1989 to 1999, including serving as its Chairman. Since 1999, Mr. O'Neal served on the Board of Directors of Unified Grocers, Inc. serving as its First Vice Chairman since 2005. Mr. O'Neal was also a proud veteran of the United States Army. Mr. O'Neal spent more than 30 years in the Portland area. He and his wife, Marcia, enjoyed wonderful times together with family and friends at their vacation home on Rockaway Beach, OR. Mr. O'Neal is survived by Marcia, his loving wife of 26 years; his sons, Jeffery O'Neal (Tiffany) and Dustin Schuster (Melissa); his grandchildren, Madison and Pierce; and his mother and father, Marie and Miles O'Neal. His family was his pride, joy and devotion.
