Robert Barnes

Robert Paul Barnes, M.D.
1945 – 2016

Bob Barnes, 71, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 2, 2016 surrounded by his wife of 47 years and two daughters.

A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, April 8th at 2 pm at Ustick Baptist Church, 14301 W. McMillian Rd, Boise. Services are under the direction of Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel.

Bob was born on February 14, 1945 in Glendale, California. He grew up in Edmonds, Washington where he enjoyed playing sports, fishing with his dad, and scouting. He was an exceptional student athlete and was awarded an appointment to the US Air Force Academy. While at the Academy, Bob excelled as a football player and was recognized as Outstanding Squadron Commander in the class of 1967. His compassionate heart and tenacious work ethic led him to pursue medicine after graduation and was accepted to every medical school to which he applied. Bob chose to attend Duke University Medical School where he developed a passion for the challenge of cardiovascular surgery.

In June of 1968, Bob married Jean in a ceremony at the Air Force Academy chapel. They drove across the country to begin life together in North Carolina. There they were blessed with the birth of two daughters, Rachel and Caroline. Bob trained in general and thoracic surgery at Duke. In 1976, the family moved to San Antonio, Texas where he completed his medical training at Wilford Hall Air Force Hospital.

After leaving the Air Force in 1981, Bob joined a Cardiovascular practice in Boise, Idaho. His commitment to his patients made him a respected and highly sought-after physician. Despite his demanding schedule, Bob made an effort to express personal care and interest in his patients' lives, often going above and beyond expectations.

Bob retired from a distinguished career in medicine in 2003, the year he became a grandfather. "Papa" loved to visit his grandchildren and took up several interesting hobbies. Bob always loved gardening, but became particularly interested in growing table grapes and became involved in the Idaho Table Grape Association. He also became active in Bible Study Fellowship, took up bee keeping, and options trading. Bob was constantly challenging himself to learn something new!

Bob is survived by wife, Jean, of Boise, ID; daughters Rachel DeFrees of Parker, CO and Caroline Morris of Edmond, OK; sister Margaret Barnes of Lynnwood, WA; brother Richard Barnes of Lacey, WA; and seven grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Contributions in Bob's memory may be made to Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Air Force Academy Endowment, or Bible Study Fellowship International.

I talked with Bob at length during the 50th reunion. None of us live forever, but he seemed like he had another 30 years in him, and, back in the day, he was the last guy anyone thought would pass-on relatively early. Of course, we all thought the same thing about Herb, Wayne, Monte, et al. While we talked at the reunion, he joked about his inability to get a date for the senior ball, which was paradoxical because, when attempting to insure that everyone was set-up (even me), I spoke to probably a dozen girls who mentioned Bob, and I think I passed some names along, but he was surprisingly shy in that regard. He had a fan club he didn't know about. No shock, really. Successful in everything he did, good looking guy, affable, and everyone liked Bob. Everyone will miss him.

One of the highlights of our 50th EHS reunion was reuniting and sitting with Bob at dinner.....always the comsummate gentleman, so accomplished, yet so humble, he had the ability of always making you feel you were more important than anyone at that moment.  What a wonderful soul, who gave to everyone, was a super leader and team player, and a person we all wanted to emulate!  He was a "star" in every sense of the word, in family, academics, sports, medicine, and we have lost the " best of the good guys."  I think we could all agree that he set the standard for a life well lived in every way!

I always liked and admired Bob - he was one of the many reasons that I feel privileged to have graduated from Edmonds Sr High School. To his wife and daughters and the rest of his family, I am so sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry to hear of Bob's passing.  I missed the 50th reunion and Bob was one of the people I would have loved to see.  He was always gracious, humble and truly someone to be admired.  He had accomplished so much in his lifetime and was someone that could be very proud of the way he had lived his life.  My thoughts and prayers are with Jean, and his daughters and their families.

I entered Edmonds High in my sophmore year, a very shy and quiet person; but Bob always had a smile and would take the time to talk to me.  He was warm, compassionate and kind.  I thought him to be a friend and someone that could be trusted.  A person that you could "take their word to the bank".  He was admired for all the attributes that most would love to be like in a fraction of a way.  I am so happy to know that life did not dissapoint him and he lived it full and the way he wanted.  We were all blessed to have him in our lives.  RIP dear one.
